Abstract
This chapter outlines the ways in which Western medical knowledge was translated during the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries in East Asia. Focusing on China, Japan and Korea, where the translation of Western knowledge was intricately connected to nationalism and beliefs about and desires towards progress and power, it provides a comparative perspective on the actors, processes and effects of the transnational production and circulation of Western medical knowledge in the region.
