The definition of ITS architecture and service is used for a basic element to execute the new ITS projects. Traffic equipments and facilities are efficiently operated by ITS and provide useful information to passengers. Thus it is believed that ITS provides safe and convenient environments to users and efficiency of the entire transportation systems. Domestic ITS projects are currently promoting by Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, Korea Expressway Corporation, local authorities, National Police Agency, etc. However the construction of ITS centers for providing traffic information of National Highway, arterial street, and other roadways is almost completed. Therefore, it is expected that future ITS projects may be expanding functional specifications of the ITS center because of increasing of local facilities. In addition another major key issue will be the integration and interoperability among ITS centers. This study reviewed the current ITS center design, and analyzed the design methodology applied to the ITS center. From this observation, it identified inherent problems and inefficiency within the current state of art of ITS center, suggested a basic direction for efficient design of the ITS center based on systems' perspective. In the next follow-up studies, it is necessary to investigate detail items to make a basic frame for sharing and checking information as design inputs after recognizing a virtuous circle structure between design and operation.
