Korea Supervised by Professor Kyunghoon Jung In the clinical practice of psychoanalysis, perverted subject exhibits unusual transference patterns different from those of psychotic and neurotic patients, who attend therapy to alleviate the distress associated with the symptoms of their conditions or widen their understanding of themselves through treatment. They engage in various kinds of enactments to rouse the therapist in every session, such as staying silent for multiple sessions, unapologetically infringe rules established by the therapist, dragging the conversation into argumentative debates, and devaluating the therapist's capabilities in the therapist's face. The novice therapist is taken aback by the perverted subject's transference—where the perverted subject obtains gratification from damaging the role and function of the symbolic big Other of psychoanalysis, and condemning the contradictions and limitations of reality—losing the therapist role and descending into being the perverted subject's partner in embodying the perverted subject's fantasies, resulting in an unconscious collusive relationship. When such perverse transference is activated during clinical psychoanalysis, how should the therapist function, and what role should be assumed? To answer this question, various patterns of perverse transference that have been published in the case study literature from clinical psychoanalytical practice—and the role of therapists working with such transference patterns—were explored from the Freud-Lacanian perspective and contemporary Freudian perspectives, including Kleinian. Through this, difficulties stemming from the perverse transference, faced by the author in clinical psychoanalytical practice, will be understood. In addition, future directions for clinical practice that provide practical assistance for therapists with a psychoanalytic orientation—those who have experienced, are experiencing, or will experience challenges similar to the one faced by the author—will be proposed. First, the stances of a number of schools regarding the issue of perverts, such as the Freud-Lacanian perspective and contemporary Freudian perspectives, including Kleinian theory, will be summarized; the conventional transference patterns of perverse will be explained separately using the five categories of ‘imaginary transference’, ‘collusive relationship’, split and denial’, ‘fetishism and sexualization’, and ‘attack on truth’. Case studies will be cited and summarized, centered around the therapist role, regarding the attitude that should be assumed by the therapist to survive and function as a therapist when such transference patterns are enacted or reproduced in a therapeutic relationship. To have the patient accept symbolic castration and move on from perverse transference to become an entity capable of desiring as one questions one's own identity, the therapist must be capable of denying satisfaction in the imaginary domain—which is demanded by the perverted subject—and maintain a position as a symbolic big Other. The therapist must also be capable of perceiving the therapeutic collusive relationship established by the therapist's countertransference and the perverse transference, escape from the role of a partner unconsciously demanded by the perverted subject, and interpret the dynamics of transference that are occurring in the Here and Now. As the Object 󰡐a󰡑 who serves the role of a symbolic big Other for the perverts, the therapist’s role is only possible when the therapist exists as a separate entity that is hard yet not cold, with clear limits. This creates trust that enables the therapist to work safely on the perverts' original trauma. Although there can be differences between the viewpoints or conceptualizations of different schools of thought regarding theoretical expressions or concepts, most of the perverse transference encountered in the field during clinical psychoanalytical practice emerge as a mixture of various viewpoints from diverse schools of psychoanalysis: likewise, the role of the therapist should be approached from an integrative perspective to establish a foundation that can be used to build a therapeutic relationship. Since the author focused on the therapist's role—which is to work through the perverse transferences enacted during clinical practice—there were limitations in handling the detailed differences between the theoretical concepts. The reason for adhering to the integrative perspective that utilizes everything that can be beneficial for therapy, rather than differentiating between theoretical distinctions, is because the author believes that the formation of critical therapeutic turning-points is only possible when the therapist understands the context and stubbornness of perverse transference, is not overwhelmed by said transference, and continues serving in the therapist’s role.
