Alternative Abstract
Volunteerism got its roots in the early history of mankind and was very vital in rural communities maintaining the values of solidarity. With the passage of time, volunteerism raised international concern and this led to the formation of the International Red Cross Society created after the Crimean war in the late 18th century. This research paper looks at the evolution of NGOs in the voluntary sector in South Korea from the period of political and civil unrest to a more democratic society with proliferation of NGOs. With a case study focused on the domestic ministry of World Vision Korea through community welfare programs, it analyzes the role and significance of this sector in the South Korean society. It put forward some proposals through which World Vision Korea and other NGOs in the voluntary sector in South Korea can adopt in a bit to become leading partners in poverty alleviation.
