본 논문은 계층적 컬러 모델(hierarchical color model, HCM)[1]을 제안한다. 계층적 컬러 모델은 입력 영상과 이로부터 추출(또는 추정)될 수 있는 팔레트(또는 컬러 모델) 사이에서 역할하는 새로운 중간 표현이다. 계층적 컬러 모델을 이용하면 크기를 지정하지 않고도 팔레트 또는 컬러 모델을 사진으로부터 자동으로 생성할 수 있다. 더 나아가, 이 계층적 표현의 특성을 이용하면 결과 팔레트(또는 컬러 모델)를 수정하는 것도 가능하다. 비교를 통해 기존 어떤 방법보다 계층적 컬러 모델이 더 간결한 팔레트와 컬러 모델을 제공함이 증명된다. 또한 계층적 컬러 모델이 제공하는 상호작용성은 팔레트 기반 사진 리컬러링[2]과 소프트 컬러 세그멘테이션[3]같은 영상 색상 조작의 결과를 개선한다. 이 상호작용성을 더 활용하면 팔레트 제작을 위한 새로운 사용자 경험을 제공할 수 있다. 본 논문은 계층적 컬러 모델 기반의 새로운 사용자 경험을 설명하며, 이에 기반해 새로운 대화형 시각화를 포함하는 프로토타입 시스템을 제시한다. 이를 일련의 사용자 조사를 통해 평가하는 한편, 그 결과를 논의하여 새로운 사용자 경험의 유효성을 보인다. 저자는 팔레트 및 컬러 모델과 관련된 시각 컴퓨팅 응용 및 시각 콘텐츠 생성 분야에 기여할 수 있길 바라며 계층적 컬러 모델을 널리 알리고자 한다.
Alternative Abstract
This thesis introduces a hierarchical color model (HCM) [1], which is a novel proxy representation between an input image and any palettes (or color model) that could be extracted (or estimated) from the image. With or without a specified size, the HCM automatically generates a palette or a color model from a photograph. Moreover, one can manipulate the result by exploiting the characteristics of the hierarchical representation. It is proven that the HCM yields much succinct palettes and color models than any conventional approaches through comparisons. The interactivity provided by HCM improves the results of image color manipulation, such as palette-based photo recoloring [2] and soft color segmentation [3]. Further utilization of such interactivity enables a new user experience for palette authoring. This thesis describes the new HCM-based user experience and presents a prototype system, whose main component is a novel interactive visualization based on the proposed UX. These are evaluated through a series of user studies, and the results, which show that the new UX is effective, are discussed. By evangelizing the HCM, the author hopes to contribute to visual computing applications and visual content creation, especially regarding palettes and color models.
