Alternative Abstract
Nowadays there is an apparently new range of activities of the cooperatives: Fair Trade activities. The link between cooperatives and Fair Trade does not come from the literature because there is still a little information; this link comes from the daily practice where these terms are used interchangeably. The purpose of this paper is examining the role of the second level cooperatives in the Coffee Commodity Chain under the Fair Trade Labeling System and its impact in the coffee production of the primary cooperatives. The paper is divided in four chapters. The first chapter explains the importance of writing a thesis about Fair Trade, coffee and cooperatives. The second chapter is an exploration of the literature related with the main concepts, especially Fair Trade and Cooperatives. The third chapter is about exploring the field for the research. In this chapter there is an explanation about the social, political and economic situation of Guatemala; and also an explanation about the situation of the cooperative movement in the country. The fourth chapter is the final analysis and a case study in order to connect the theory with the practice.
