Alternative Abstract
The issue of poverty alleviation has been at the center of global policy making. The drive to eradicate extreme poverty in developing countries has been more urgent given the need to attain the Millennium Development Goals this year (2015). Remoteness and isolation are critical components of poverty with particular emphasis on rural poverty. This study will seek to examine rural poverty as multidimensional, adopting an asset based approach wherein poverty is defined as a deprivation in asset and entitlements to the essentials in life and susceptibility to physical and economic shocks and to seasonal crises. This study aims to reveal that, rural roads are crucial in alleviating poverty among the rural poor as it forms the basis for transportation and communication. This work therefore seeks to highlight the impacts rural roads have on the socio economic and political life of the rural poor in the Muyuka in the South West Region as well as the complementary services that could help further enhance the benefits the road accords to the local people.
